How to take care of your skin during the cold weather

Dry skin season is upon us. For some people this can mean dry, cracked skin that feels like sandpaper… YIKES. You can avoid this scary skin season by taking a few extra steps to make sure your skin is at its best. Don’t let the fall and winter weather dull out your skin!

Changes in the seasons can lead to changes in your skin. There is less moisture in the air during the fall and winter months which can lead to overall dryer skin. Adding more moisture into your skin is a huge step in fighting against dry skin season. Here are some tips to keep your skin moisturized as the weather gets colder!

1 Use a Humidifier

The chilly air can start to dry out the skin and sinuses. Having your heater on higher can also be a factor in your skin dryness. A humidifier can be a real game changer by putting more moisture into the air. Put a humidifier on your nightstand or close to your bed and by the time you wake up your skin and sinuses will be way less dry.

2 Moisturize

Dry and cracked skin can be a real discomfort throughout the fall and winter. Make sure to invest in a good facial and body moisturizer. Our day crème and night serum are perfect to add an extra layer of moisture to your face.

3 Use Chapstick

Walk out into the cold air and your lips can completely dry out in almost seconds. Have chapstick placed in multiple areas so that when you are starting to feel your lips dry out you can easily access one. Place one in your car, on your desk, by your bed or any other areas you are at frequently. A 3 pack of chapstick can be a real life saver through the cold months.

4 Exfoliate Carefully

Exfoliating is very important for your skin but in excess can dry it out. We recommend using our exfoliator once a week, but during extreme cold weather switch to an every other week exfoliation routine. And don’t forget to moisturize immediately following to lock in moisture.

5 Take Cooler Showers

This may seem like the last thing you want to do during the winter months but taking a slightly cooler shower can help your skin. Hot showers can really bother dry skin and irritate it more. If you do continue taking hot showers just shorten your time showering to expose your skin to the hot water less.

6 Lower the heater

Sometimes cranking the heat during an extremely cold day seems like the right thing to do, but it is slowly dehydrating your skin. Instead of blasting the heat, opt to keep the heat lower and instead throw on an extra sweater and have blankets on hand to stay warm.

7 Drink More water

Add moisture from the inside out by staying hydrated. Staying on top of your water intake can really help to hydrate your skin.

8 Put on Sunscreen

Many people only think to wear sunscreen on their face during the summer months, but sunscreen is useful all year round. Just because it is cold out doesn’t mean that the sun isn’t affecting your skin. A nice layer of sunscreen is beneficial even during the coldest months of the year.

9 Moisturize Extra

Prevention is critical. Add an extra layer of moisturizer and swipe on some chapstick before you go out in the breezy air to keep your skin from cracking.

With a few extra steps your skin can stay soft, smooth and radiant throughout the cold months.
