Busting Skincare Myths

The skincare industry is filled with myths about what is good and bad for your skin. When researching what is best for your skin it can be easy to find conflicting information. We are here to help bust some common misconceptions and give you the information you need to make informed skincare decisions.

Hot water is beneficial for your skin – False

Washing your face with hot water can remove the essential natural oils that help moisturize your skin. Frequently washing your face with hot water can leave your skin dry. Make sure to use warm or lukewarm water when washing your face to avoid leaving your face dehydrated.

Only teenagers and young adults get acne – False

Sadly, acne can happen at all ages. Puberty often causes acne in teenagers but there are still other types of acne that occur at later stages in life. This is one reason why having a skincare routine at any age is important.

Pores can open and close – False

Certain things can cause your pores to loosen or tighten, but your pores do not fully open and close. For example, steam can loosen your pores, but it doesn’t open them up.

Oily skin doesn’t need to be moisturized – False

All face washes are created to remove dirt and natural oils off your skin, which can leave your skin lacking moisture. Immediately after cleansing you should apply a moisturizer to hydrate your skin, no matter your skin type.

Dermatologist recommended automatically makes a product good – False

Dermatologist recommended isn’t anything that proves the quality of a product, it is just a marketing tactic. Legally this statement means that at least one dermatologist has tested this product, but it doesn’t mean that any legitimate organization endorses the product. Don’t let this statement sway your product judgement.

All SPF protection is equal – False

Many skin products, not just sunscreen, contain SPF. But just because a product includes SPF doesn’t mean it protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. If you plan on being out in the sun, make sure your skin is protected from both damaging rays.

Having your skin feel tight is a good thing – False

Many people conceive tight skin as meaning less wrinkly but that isn’t true. Most cases tight skin means that your skin is too dry. Tight skin most likely means you need to step up your moisturization game.

Face masks shrink your pores – False

Some face masks can be used to remove built up dirt and debris. Removing debris can make your pores less prominent, but it doesn’t actually change the pore size.

Its good to pop pimples – False

There are some ways to remove pimples at home in a safer way, but overall, it is better to avoid popping pimples on your own. Squeezing can push bacteria deeper into the skin, which can cause more redness, swelling and irritation. Popping a pimple can cause a scab and which can sometimes leave behind a scar. Removing pimples on your own can be tempting but fight the urge and stop popping your pimples.
